Our Untold Stories is a series of three books which are the results of a two-year project which set out to explore, for the first time, the history and settlement of the African-Caribbean, Chinese and Asian communities in Gloucestershire.
Nasreen Akhtar, Senior Librarian at Gloucestershire County Library Ethnic Services explains "I started planning this project after realising there was a lack of published information in this important field. The aim was to capture forever, the stories of all the individuals involved."
"Our aim throughout this project has been to create a valuable educational resource. Therefore this book also has support from a website, video material and a photographic display. Guidelines for classroom and group use of this material will follow. As a result, it has already inspired many schools, colleges and community groups to carry out history recording activities at a local level."
Now the lesson plans on iRespect should go even further and bring the wealth of information and insight in Our Untold Stories to many more students.
Copies of the books can be bought from Gloucestershire Library Service and cost £5.
Our Untold Stories has won national awards: The picture above shows Nasreen Akhtar holding The Library Association/Emerald Intelligence & Ful Text PR and Publicity Award 2000.
In June 2003 Our Untold Stories won a Lottery Monitor award. This picture shows Nasreen holding the award.
The Lottery Monitor is an independent newsletter investigating where lottery 'good causes' money goes. The awards recognise projects that have used money received from the lottery to create something brilliant, good value for money and of real benefit to the community.
