Dean Close International Activity Day - July 5th 2012
On Thursday 5th July, seventy students with English as an Additional Language (EAL) from 12 schools across Gloucestershire, were invited by their teachers from the Race, Equality and Diversity Service (READS) to attend an International Day at Dean Close School in Cheltenham.
The schools participating were: Archway, Barnwood Park, Beaufort, Bournside, Churchdown, Farmor's, Gloucester Academy, Maidenhill, Millbrook Academy, Newent, Pittville and Tewkesbury.
Pupils from Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 from a variety of different backgrounds and ethnicities including Chinese, Romanian, Russian, Afghan, Nigerian, Czech, Polish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Sri Lankan, Nepalese, Lithuanian, Slovakian, Spanish, Turkish, Hungarian, Jamaican, Dutch, Bengali, Latvian, Thai, Sinhala and Bulgarian took part in a range of different activities throughout the day. The activities provided included: Football, Basketball, African Dancing, Swimming, Cricket, Badge making, Outdoor games, Wall Climbing, Comic Making and Art and Crafts.
Year 9 pupils from Dean Close School undertook the role of hosts and looked after the pupils, joining them in the day’s events.
This enrichment day was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to enjoy new experiences, meet other EAL students and make new friends. It was a great success with all the pupils asking to return again next year!
