Fishpool Awards Evening 2011
On 19 May we held a very special Fishpool Awards Evening: our tenth Anniversary Celebration! In the early days, the Awards Evening was held at the Guild Hall; Fishpool has gone from strength to strength in the intervening years and this year’s Awards were presented to a packed house at the Picturedrome Theatre.
The audience was welcomed by Dee Russell-Thomas, Head of Service, who founded Fishpool all those years ago. She described the work of Fishpool over the years and the vital work which continues to be done to raise the achievement of Black pupils in our schools. Clare Cody, Lead Teacher for Black Achievement, described the exciting Audio Visual Performing Arts project READS has run with Fishpool schools this year, in collaboration with Michael Roach of European Blues, who obtained funding for the project. Each Fishpool School chose a pupil to form a filming group, which received professional training from Tim Pellet, Director of Cordial AV Film Studios. This group then filmed a voice coaching session run for all the Fishpool pupils, led by Shereece Storrad of “Black Voices” group in Birmingham, culminating in a group version of “ I Believe”. Staff in Fishpool schools were filmed describing their personal beliefs and the pupils then edited the footage and helped to produce a spectacular DVD of the whole project. The completed DVD was shown and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.
