'Going for Gold'

The Gloucestershire Traveller Awards Evening at the Picturedrome

June 28th 2012

This was a fantastic evening celebrating the achievements of Traveller children and young people in our county. Over 75 pupils were nominated for awards from 13 different schools in 4 different categories: sports, attendance, literacy and numeracy, and finally personal and social.

The Elective Home Education Team and Prospects Training Re: Engage Programme also presented awards.
In memory of Elaine who worked for the Traveller Team for over 17 years, the Elaine Allan Cup for Outstanding Achievement was presented to Chantelle Packman by Elaine’s husband Dougie.
We were delighted that 7 young people performed during the evening and wowed us with their talent! The performances concluded with the wonderful rich voice of Betty Davies, a mum from one of our primary schools.

The evening ended with refreshments and a chance to see the winning entries of the "Going for Gold" Art and Writing competitions.
Many thanks to the head teachers from Gloucester Academy, Norton and Kingsholm for presenting awards; and especially to Dee Russell-Thomas and Peter Holmes for their vote of thanks.
